Cook It Like a Pro

How to Make a Proper Hotdog at Home

Preparation: approximately 5 minutes
Reheating: approximately 5–8 minutes
Makes: 6 hotdogs

A warm Frankfurter, a lightly toasted bun and your favourite toppings. A classic hotdog doesn't need to be complicated.

Step 1. Gently Reheat the Frankfurters

Our Frankfurter sausages are already fully cooked. Gentle reheating brings out their flavour while keeping the sausages juicy and tender.

1) Remove the Frankfurters from their packaging. Place a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a small amount of neutral cooking oil.
2) Arrange the sausages in the pan, leaving enough space to turn them comfortably.
3) Reheat gently for approximately 5–8 minutes, turning occasionally until thoroughly hot. Allow the sausages to develop a little colour without over-browning.
4) Avoid using excessive heat, which can cause the casings to split and the sausages to lose some of their natural juiciness. Once heated through, remove from the pan and keep warm.

Step 2. Warm the Hotdog Buns

Warming the buns makes a noticeable difference. A lightly toasted interior adds a pleasant texture, while the outside stays soft and tender.

1) Carefully open the six hotdog buns along their existing splits, keeping both sides connected.
2) Wipe the frying pan clean if necessary and return it to medium-low heat. Place the buns cut-side down in the dry pan.
3) Warm for approximately 1–2 minutes until lightly toasted on the inside. Take care not to overheat the buns, as they should remain soft and easy to hold.

Step 3. Assemble Your Hotdogs

Now comes the best part. Keep it classic or make each hotdog your own with a combination of your favourite toppings.

1) Place one warm Frankfurter into each toasted hotdog bun. The sausage should sit comfortably inside the bread.
2) Add your favourite condiments. A little mustard and ketchup are classic choices, allowing the flavour of the Frankfurter to remain the star.
3) For a little more texture, add finely chopped onions, pickles or sauerkraut. Keep the toppings balanced so they complement, rather than overwhelm, the sausage.
4) Serve immediately while the Frankfurters are hot and the buns are soft and lightly toasted.

Make It Your Own

The Classic
A warm Frankfurter, yellow mustard and a little tomato ketchup. Simple, familiar and always a good choice.

The Deli Style
Add sauerkraut, a little mustard and finely chopped pickles for a pleasantly tangy contrast to the sausage.

The Weekend Favourite
Try gently caramelised onions with a little Dijon mustard. The sweetness of the onions works particularly well with the savoury Frankfurter.

Serve It With
Hotdogs are perfect with crispy oven fries, potato wedges, coleslaw or a fresh green salad. An easy meal for the whole family.
